AIM
The Civil-Military Cooperation Course is a specialization course that aims at enabling students with the technical and theoretical knowledge necessary in the carrying out of tasks in Civil-Military Cooperation Operations, in Military Staff functions and within NATO/ HQ and National Military Staffs.
OBJECTIVES
Understand the framework of Peace Support Operations (PSO), in particular Crisis Response Operations (CRO);
Understand CIMIC policies and doctrines being used in NATO;
Understand the action of International Organizations (IOs), Government Organizations (GOs) and Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs);
Understand other roles and functions that interact with CIMIC (Info Ops, Targeting, PsyOps, Public Information, Humint, Civil Matters);
Understand the Portuguese Civil Affairs Doctrine applied during the Portuguese Colonial War, in Africa;
Understand the CIMIC contributions in the NATO Military Operations Planning Process (OPP);
Learn about the current CIMIC roles within the Portuguese Armed Forces and NATO’s Multinational CIMIC Group (MNCG/NATO);
Apply NATO’s Military Operations Planning in a non-Article 5 situation.
COURSE STRUCTURE
The Civil-Military Cooperation Course comprises 1 curricular unit – Civil-Military Cooperation – integrated in the scientific area of Military Operations;
The course is organized in accordance with the European Credits Trading System (ECTS). The total number of credits required to complete the course is 3 ECTS.

COURSE LENGHT
The course duration is 10 working days and comprises 55 school hours.
QUALIFICATIONS CONFERRED BY THE COURSE
A Specialization in Civil-Military Cooperation Diploma is awarded to students who successfully conclude all syllabus units, having achieved 3 ECTS credits.
ADMISSION CONDITIONS
The Civil-Military Cooperation Specialization Course may be attended by:
- Senior officers from any branch of the Armed forces and the Guarda Nacional Republicana (National Republican Guard) and Captains/ First lieutenants qualified with the Field Grade Officers Course;
- Captains/ First lieutenants that are not qualified with the Field Grade Officers Course may be admitted as an exception;
- Officers from friendly countries may attend the course, under granted permission by the IESM – Institute for Higher Military Studies’ Director;
- Civilians belonging to organizations that collaborate with the IESM, under granted permission by the IESM – Institute for Higher Military Studies’ Director.
