Rear-Admiral José Figueiredo born in 1965 and joined the Naval Academy in 1984, having been promoted to ensign in October 1989 and to actual rank in 25th of March 2022.
During his career as junior officer embarked in several Navy units as NRP “Almeida Carvalho”, a hydrographic survey ship and, after has been qualified as Principal Warfare Officer (Underwater) in 1991, joined NRP “João Roby” and NRP “Vasco da Gama” as Tactical Action Officer and then, for about 2 years, was instructor at the Anti-Submarine School.
After his promotion to lieutenant-commander served in the Navy Tactical Center for about 4 years and, after that, was appointed as Operations Officer of NRP “Corte-Real”. RAdm Figueiredo participated in many exercises and real operations as Operational Sea Training, SWORDFISH, LINKED SEAS, STRONG RESOLVE, JTFEX, LOYAL MARINER and in the NEO/HA operation in Guinea-Bissau in 1998. Was assigned to the NATO Standing Naval Force Atlantic in 1997 and to the Standing NRF Maritime Group 1 in 2005, within which participate in the Operation ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR in the East Mediterranean.
Between September 2005 and June 2009 was responsible for tactical and naval operations branch of learning at the Naval Academy and line officers’ department coordinator.
During his assigned duty as Commanding Officer of Portuguese M Class Frigate N.R.P. “D. Francisco de Almeida”, between January 2010 and October 2013, the ship was involved in NATO Operation Ocean Shield in the Indian Ocean during the second semester of 2011.
Between October of 2013 and October of 2015 he held the position of Head of Prospective and Military Strategic Planning Branch in the Strategic Planning Division of the Portuguese Joint General Staff and then, until October 2017, he was the head of the Situation and Personnel Management Department of the Navy Personnel Directorate.
Between September 2018 and December 2019, was the Director of the Portuguese Navy Training and Evaluation Centre in the Lisbon Naval Base and after with the rank of commodore, was appointed as the Director of the Portuguese Navy Personnel Directorate until March of 2022.
Presently is the head of the Post-Graduated Studies Department in the Portuguese Military University Institute.
RAdm Figueiredo is qualified with the Portuguese Naval War College Navy and Joint Staff Courses, with the Maritime Warfare Course in the HMS Dryad at December 1999 and attended the Maritime Euroweek in Bracknell, UK, at the Joint Services Command and Staff College on May 1999. During 2017/2018 become qualified with the Flag Officer Promotion Course at the Portuguese Military University Institute.
During the course of his career he has been decorated on several occasions attaining six distinguished service award, two military merit award and two Naval Cross (3rd class) as well as the gold exemplary conduct citation.
